The Central Corridor line will pass through a campus that attracts 80,000 people on a typical day. Washington Avenue is the hub for University residence halls, Coffman Memorial Union, the graduate and professional schools, the Institute of Technology, the University libraries, and dozens of heavily used class rooms.
The Central Corridor line will include three stations that directly serve the Twin Cities campus: the Stadium Village, East Bank, and West Bank stations. The University is one of the six partners on this project.
On the east side of downtown Minneapolis at the Metrodome, the Central Corridor line will connect with the existing Hiawatha line. Heading east, the Central Corridor line will cross underneath Interstate 35W and follow Washington Avenue as it approaches the West Bank. The line will continue over the Mississippi River on the Washington Avenue Bridge to the East Bank. Just before it reaches the Northrop Mall area, the street-level line will enter a portal to an underground tunnel continuing directly beneath Washington Avenue until near the Huron Avenue intersection, where it will veer northeast across University Avenue to an alignment parallel to the University Transitway east of 25th Avenue South. Shortly afterward, the line will exit the tunnel near the Transitway and head east to 29th Avenue, where it will curve to realign with University Avenue and continue on to St. Paul.
Station Area ContextSpaced approximately one-half mile from each other, the three proposed LRT stations on the Minneapolis campus are as follows.
See a large satellite map (221 K) showing all three Central Corridor station locations.
West Bank Station, located on the western edge of campus where people arrive at the interface between campus and the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. To the west is Interstate 35W and the Metrodome; to the east is the Washington Avenue Bridge over the Mississippi River.

East Bank Station (tunnel), located at the geographic and symbolic center of the Twin Cities campus. At the juncture of the Northrop Mall Area and the Academic Health Center Area between Church Street and Union Street, Washington Avenue is animated with continuous vehicle and pedestrian movement.

This cross section shows how the East Bank Station would incorporate a narrower roadway, wider sidewalks, improved landscaping, light wells, tunnel connections and the train platform.

Stadium Village Station, located at an eastern “Gateway Area” of campus, where people arrive at the interface between campus and the Stadium Village neighborhood commercial area. The station will be directly adjacent the future TCF Bank Stadium and poised at the doorstep of existing and future biomedical research facilities.
